Today, September 30th, we wish Sondra Lee a happy birthday! Dancer, actress, director, teacher, and acting coach Sondra Lee is known for her intensity and unwavering focus as a performer. Jerome Robbins first cast her in ‘High Button Shoes’ (1947) and gave the four-foot-ten-and-a-half dancer a nickname -- “Peanut” -- from the Charles Shultz cartoon strip(Peanuts). She made a splash as Tiger Lily on Broadway in 1954 in ‘Peter Pan’ with Mary Martin and Cyril Ritchard (directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins), and nationwide in the color television broadcast of the same in 1960. She played Minnie Fay in the original production of ‘Hello, Dolly!’ (1964) and toured widely in that role. After her dancing days, she taught at Stella Adler’s Conservatory and the NYU Drama School, and has coached filmmakers on three continents. Sondra Lee is a member of the Actors’ Studio, both as an actress and a director; she currently teaches her own acting classes and coaches privately. Lee’s memoir Ive Slept With Everybody (2009) is an entertaining and insightful peek into the life of a dancer, told in a dancer’s language. (She plans a sequel, to be titled As I Was Saying.)
