Today The Gilbert School is celebrating Founders Day to honor William L. Gilbert. In 1828, Mr. Gilbert opened clock-making shops in Bristol and Farmington, CT. In 1841, he and his partners opened another shop in Winsted. Mr. Gilbert was a successful businessman. He was also a generous person who used his money to help many people, including opening a home for children. In his will, he provided for the “establishment and maintenance of an institution of learning to be known as The Gilbert School.” Since 1895 when the school opened, TGS has followed Mr. Gilberts directions that instruction be given for the improvement of mankind by affording such assistance and means of educating the young as will help them to become good citizens. Today we remember Mr. Gilbert, his kindness, and his philanthropic spirit.
