Today? The morning goes to my fiction-reading, pre-New Year resolution. With the usual quiet jazz playing and windows cracked open to the hard sun and tingling chill, Im reading James Salters A Sport and a Pastime. Impressions after 77 pages: an agreeable story of a young American writer in France, but metaphors and similes abound to excess, until theres a sense that cleverness is overwhelming rather than enhancing the narrative. Still, Im into it and will be until around 2 or so, when we drop by friends Evert Wilbrink and Deborah Wilbrink for a while -- I wont say what were bringing, in case theyre reading this. Tonight, in classic Christmas fashion, were going out for Chinese, with our son Ivan Doerschuk on the eve of his departure on another adventure. Not a bad day, if all goes well.
