Today Tom Melton started a debate on Islam and the young men going to Syria and Iraq to fight for The Caliphate. When his views were met by resistance and he was offered sources of information so he might try to understand why such things are happening he deleted the post. Here is my second rebuttal I did not have time to post - It is pointless getting angry and calling these people dickheads. They are lost, subject to highly confusing religious and social disturbance and are victims of corrupt, ideologically bankrupt and unspeakably violent Western governments. I hoped you might try to understand them rather than add to the shit storm of anger. Take a breath, forget about nationalism (it really doesnt matter whether these young men are British or not - its kind of meaningless) and remember that however misguided and violent all humans are subject to change and only by understanding as much as we can about individuals and the world they live in can we hope to move forwards toward a resolution - The sources I gave him were https://youtube/watch?v=fxDuENvxw_o and Jason Burkes book on Al-Qaeda (which is a very interesting exploration of how the relationship between the middle east and the west has developed over the last half century. I know Tom is going to be pissed off that Ive written this post but I hoped anyone else out there who is feeling confused might find some of these sources eye opening. You might also consider watching Vice reports on ISIS though keep in mind the historical and political context of these events. Evil doesnt exist in a vacuum.
