Today a friend of the Lovell Police Department tested their MagicJack VoIP phone to make sure it would work in an emergency. Here is what she and her husband found out and posted on her FB page: ***FYI*** Anyone with a VOIP Phone read this!!!! We just tested our magicJack VOIP phone to see if the VOIP phone system would work for 911 calls. When my husband called 911 it did NOTHING...I then read online this, I was never told this when I signed up with them, just thought you all should be aware! magicJack is subject to the limitations of the 911 emergency response system where your registered address is located. You should maintain an alternate means of dialing 911 and make sure other users of your magicJack know this. NOTE: 911 Emergency Services will NOT work with magicJack You must pay to receive 911 services. To continue to receive certain limited 911 calling priviliges as described in our TOS, you will need to click Enable on the 911 page in your my.magicJack account. These unfortunate changes were made necessary because certain emergency 911 Districts in certain jurisdictions requested we send an email bill on their behalf and benefit. magicJack will not profit by collecting pass through charges for 911 authorities. The changes will be billed annually by email and may cost anywhere from $6.00 to over $60.00 a year. On average throughout the country it will cost about $12.00 a year. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you have a VoIP phone, PLEASE check your service to see if it includes 911 services.
