Today, after attending Mass in a 19th-century Catholic cathedral - TopicsExpress

Today, after attending Mass in a 19th-century Catholic cathedral (with a great choir dominated by a formidable contralto and mezzo soprano) I began my journey through Middle Earth in the ancient Georgian capital of Mtskheta (pronounced Skayta). Set at the confluence of rivers and surrounded by mountains, this has been Georgias spiritual center for some 3,000 years. (The topography is a much more dramatic version of Pittsburgh -- I kid not). Below are images from the sixth-century Jvari Church, an impressive structure built high above Mtskheta, employing certain techniques 500 years before the Romanesque churches of Italy and western Europe.
