Today, after going all year without seeing one, I spotted a rattlesnake while on the tractor mowing. I got down and walked over to him while scanning the field for a weapon. Five foot long and at least as thick as my arm, he raised his ugly head and met my gaze. It was a wide open space so I had the advantage but in a field full of sticks I could not find one. Thus the standoff, me, hot and sweatty and eager to kill, and him, angry, venomous and just as eager. We circled, eyes never leaving the other as we both weighed our options. The tractor was not an option as a weapon because this snake, after looking deep into his eyes and connecting with him on some psychic level,and seeina how evil he was, had to die the old fashioned way: blunt force trauma. But after seeing no other option I backed away and walked back to the tractor to carry on my work while he crawled away to the nearest brush. We both left not getting what we wanted but knowing two things: we would meet again. And somebody was gonna die.
