Today as I walking I noticed a small touch on the back of my hand. As I raised my hand to see what it was, I noticed a large wasp had landed above my thumb. I knew that if I made any sudden movements thee wasp would sting me so I stood still and waited. As I began to feel hours pass, I stared at the wasp as the wasp stared at me. Gazing into her eyes, trying to decipher her motives through the blackened and opaque windows into her soul, I realized that we had come to a sort of unspoken and mutual acknowledgement of our situation. She knew that if she were to sting me, I could swat her and end her life just as quickly. I knew that if I were to swat her, she could sting me and cause me a great deal of pain. Neither of us had any intent on ending the stalemate in fear of showing our weakness so we stood under the blistering sun together for hours. She kept her eyes on my hand as it wavered above her as I kept my eye on her sizable stinger, pulsing in anticipation. Finally she flew away as quickly as she had landed as I let my arm down and exhaled a sigh of relief. As I walked away and realized that about 10 seconds had actually passed over the course of our standoff, I looked into myself and learned a universal truth that I will take with me for the rest of my life. I really hate wasps and I hope one never lands on me ever again.
