Today, as I was getting off another plane, the flight attendant - TopicsExpress

Today, as I was getting off another plane, the flight attendant said, You fly more than we do. The crazy thing is that this is really true. Ive known that for a very long time (as I near almost 2 million miles flown on just two airlines). Last year, I received a Lifetime Platinum status with Marriott hotels . . . crazy! I definitely get to be with some amazing people in amazing companies all around the world on a regular basis. It is actually quite hard to get my head around all of it sometimes. Im grateful that I get to do what I get to do for a living, and I have some crazy stories and life experiences as a result. All this said, today as I sit in an airport terminal waiting for my next flight on this beautiful Sunday afternoon, I miss my family. We definitely need to take a nice vacation before year end. This work requires serious sacrifice. This isnt a bad thing. Sacrifice is important in life . . . but for it to be sustainable for the long-term, it does require balance as well. Joining Pluralsight has brought me GREAT hope for this great mix of work hard / play hard in my own life! How? Because we simply trust people to do their best work and take time off as they need it -- no questions asked. We dont track time off and we strongly encourage people to enjoy their lives -- learning, growing, and being present to all that life offers them. We believe people do their best work when they are able to enjoy what they do. This doesnt mean it is always fun or easy -- traveling on Sunday is neither fun nor easy. However, because I can see how my work has a bigger purpose, Im willing to sacrifice to do great work. This is what we work to do within our company: Produce great results for those we serve AND live a life of meaning and purpose (both inside and outside of work). Now, Im off to my next flight. Im sharing a leadership message with executives at an innovative medical device manufacturer. I hope that the message will help them rediscover buried perspectives and impressions (because most people already know what needs to be done, they just need confirmations and permission to move forward). Hopefully, they will treat people around them with more respect and dignity as we all connect in a bigger purpose: to serve each other and find fulfillment and meaning in this life experience. What does this mean for my family? I hope I am teaching my kids that working hard is not a bad thing. I hope they understand that we must all sacrifice and be more aware of those around us. I hope they will be good leaders, citizens, neighbors and friends to many people throughout their lives as a result. I also look forward to getting back with them again soon for a good pillow fight, some wrestling, some book reading, some good food and relaxation.
