Today at 3:50 PM From: Pam Johnson Marketing and Communications Officer City of Venice SUBJECT: Venice Fire Department Bicycle Safety Tips Bicycle Safety Venice is a Silver Bicycle Friendly City. That means it is a great place to ride a bike. However, just like any other form of transportation, bicycles require maintenance and safety practices. Here are few tips from the Venice Fire Department: • Check your Equipment. Brakes, seats, pedals and handle bars should be in good condition. Tires should be properly inflated and not to worn. • Wear a helmet, and make sure it fits correctly. Florida law requires children under the age of 16 to wear helmets. However, everyone, no matter what age, is encouraged to wear a helmet. Helmets save lives. • Be visible. Wear bright colors during the day. Use reflector tape on clothes and helmets after dark. Florida law requires bicycles to have lights at night. • Ride on the right side of the road or in a designated bike lane. • Watch for pedestrians. Use a horn or bell to alert pedestrians and drivers of your approach when necessary. • Carry items in a basket or a back pack, if transporting them on a bicycle. • Ask for help. Most local bicycle shops provide free safety checks.
