According to The State, “Richland County courtroom this week, Scott and his attorney, Todd Rutherford, said Scott fired his weapon from his front yard to protect his daughter, who was being chased by people trying to hurt her.” Darrell Niles was not part of that group and was standing across the street when struck in the head by a bullet fired by Shannon Scott.
