Today at dermatologist I had interesting and laid back - TopicsExpress

Today at dermatologist I had interesting and laid back conversation with my new Doctor about stigma towards those with Mental Illness.. I said, that I felt like a lot of doctors dismiss my symptoms because I have P.T.S.D. and fybromyalgia. Both are disorder in which the patient has symptoms but can appear healthy. That although I am not on medication now because I have had therapy those medication histories are in my chart and subject me to medical professional bias that is preventing good care. To to not investigate real complaints of illness based on the fact that I or anyone else on the basis of any other mental health problem by no fault of thy own is to say that their status in life has been changed to someone whose health doesnt matter because of a label that perhaps poorly fits the patient anyway. I understand there are a variety of non specific symptoms health concerns that many people with mental health concerns are also inflicted with that have seemingly no biological basis (Please see MedlinePlus Somatization disorder ). This is likely the reason many doctors dismiss patients like me. But additionally, because I have had such poor treatment from doctor in the past I have had to resort to investigating my own health concerns to get good health care. I became an independent researcher ten years ago when I first got a diagnosis I didnt agree with. Now because I am a well informed patient, they treat me like some nut job who spends all day on the net coming up with things I got wrong with me. Just for the record, I have never thought I had auto immune disorder until the doctor diagnosed me with one and when I had a shingles I had no idea what was either, but I have read about them many times. Nor I have never thought I had Narcolepsy, Parkinsons, Bi-Polar, Anti Social personalty disorder etc...neither and I have written papers on most of those also.. So pretty much just because I am interested in finding out what causes my issues and maybe helping a few others along the way, rather than be a sheep in the prescription line..I am treated as neurotic hypochondriac.. She basically explained that I am subject to be treated as neurotic hypochondriac when ever I threaten the Doctors intelligence by being more informed them him.. and dismissed any thoughts about her partners bias.. In said in actuality, doctors often treat patients with mental health concerns who have symptoms as not imperative and attribute many problems it to the mental health state of the patient which is bias, prejudice and discriminatory. Help #endstigma at Mental Health is Not a Crime because it is real and prevents good health care for those affected.. :)
