Today at the south end of Spokanes Manito Park, across the street from the home of Republican US Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, people from Yakima, Wapato, Sunnyside, Tri-Cities, Wenatchee and Walla Walla were joined by others from Spokane to demand a just immigration reform. The group - all resident within McMorris Rodgers congressional district - consisted of people fron Mexico, El Salvador, Argentina, Colombia, and Nicaragua as well as Native Americans and Latin American indigenous and other supporters from various organizations and neighborhoods of Spokane. After a prayer by Pedro Ibarra of San Jose Catholic Church, signatures were gathered on a larger-than-life letter addressed to Rep. McMorris Rodgers. Mary Lopez shared here experience as an immigrant woman, worker and mother. David Brookbank explained why we were in Manito Park and the significance of McMorris Rodgers in the scheme of national immigration reform politics. Throughout Thomas Shalloe provided outstanding interpretation between English and Spanish. Following chants and speeches, the group crossed 25th Avenue and delivered the letter to the doorsteep of McMorris Rodgers home. A mariachi serenade was sung and, when no one answered the door, the letter was left on the porch. To borrow a phrase from todays Hoopfest theme, the ball is now in the hands of McMorris Rodgers and her colleagues in the leadership of the Republican Party.
