Today at work, a staggering number of my teammates and former teammates were laid off. Among these were people Id worked with for years, people Id hired, people Id managed, people Id spent late nights and weekends with in pursuit of those last elusive bugs, people Id raced around the hallways on tricycles while drinking beer - people I saw more than my family and people I counted amongst my friends. My job is so often fun that I tend to forget that it is, in fact, a job and my employer is, in fact, a business subject to very real fiscal pressures and capable the kind of cold, unfeeling actions that make the cold, unfeeling corporation such a vivid stereotype. But a public corporation it is and it behaves as its fiduciary responsibilities compel it to, human emotions be damned. To all those people affected, some of whom may even read this, I wish you all the best. I hope to see those that wish to stay find new roles at the company and, to the rest, I hope that fortune finds you and that our awkward hallway good-byes were not the last well see of each other.
