Today fewer than 10 percent of American students study abroad, while three times as many international students come to the U.S. If New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof had his way, American universities would send many more students abroad and to destinations far afield of Europe, where the majority of American study abroad students go. As he points out, study abroad would help Americans hone foreign language skills and and develop a global perspective — things learned best through first-hand experience.
