Today, for the tenth year in a row, the Austrian Memorial Day was followed up with a ceremony in the Salzburg Jewish Cemetery commemorating the Jewish soldiers killed in the First World War and the Jewish victims of the Nazi rulers of Austria between 1938 and 1945. As usual the Austrian Army sent a band and an honor guard along with a General who gave a short speech. And as usual Markus Feingold, the 100 year old survivor and president of the Salzburg Jewish community thanked them and gave a short speech. The city of Salzburg was also represented, as usual, by the Mayor, Social Democrat Heinz Schaden. But contrary to previous practice there was nobody there to represent the Salzburg State government, it would seem that the newly installed Conservative/Green coalition doesnt consider this a tradition worth keeping.
