Today has been a day of frustration. If one has never dealt with the disabled on a daily basis one cannot possibly understand the aggravation when one goes to make hotel reservations and trying to book a ADA room. While legally they may be compliant - they may not really be complaint. The first aggravation was a call to the Hampton Inn in Lakeland. They did not have any available. But yet they had twelve ADA rooms. My question was this- were they all rented out to disabled people? They had a suite that was hearing ADA complaint but not physically disabled compliant. This is not the first time I have had a problem. Especially in the older hotels. They might have the rails up on the walls in the bathroom- and they might have a roll in shower. However, trying to get into the room is always a fun thing to do. The threshold is so high the scooter almost turns over going out or going in. They fix up the oldest and worst rooms for the disabled. Never any suites or rooms on the beach. I called another hotel in Sarasota for an event we are supposed to attend in Oct. It was even worse. Yes, there were bars in the bathroom and there was a roll in shower- but there was no room for the scooter to move around. He could not even get into the bathroom without walking which he cannot do. Things have to change- attitudes have to change. The reason is simple the baby boomers are aging and they are the ones who spend the money. They are also the ones who are going to be disabled but they are not going to stay at home. They do travel. Treating the disabled as second class citizens is or should be criminal. They are not. They deserve access to the best just like the next person.
