Today i am posting the nirvana shatkam by sri adi shankaracharya... nirvana is salvation or enlightenment and shatkam stands for six stanzas. how to achieve enlightenment or so called nirvana? Nirvana is the realisation of self...you may ask what is the need of realisation of self but this is the irony...we have the firm belief that we know what we are but are ignorant of the very self... In actual reality the belief of ours that we know the self is the biggest evidence going to support that we are ignorant of the very self.how? the answer is that what is known is not you.just like the fact that seer cannot be the seen...in the same way what is known is not the knower,You can never know the self because it is not an object,it is the very subject(which never gets objectified). Again there is the growth and decay of knowledge...With the growth of knowledge there is the growth of knower and with its decay decays the knower...if the knower would have been the self...and as you can never see yourself(or in simple words you cannot transact with it)...You wouldnt have been aware of the growth and decay which is contrary to the perceived experience... so the problem is with us associating the self or aatma with what is non self or anaatma(as associating the aatma or self with knower in above example). getting associated with non self (or anaatma which is none other than the entire world itself) which is ever changing leads to the change in self(coz the self is believed to be associated with the changing world). The cure of this is to severe this connection between the self and the world then only we can be at peace..pletely calm and unchanging... The method to severe this connection as prescribed by Advait Vedant is neti neti...which means not this, not this... It is the means of ruthlessly and wildly negating what is non self...meditate and think over this--> what is seen(the non self) is not the seer(self or me)... so what is the seen?seen is everything what you are aware of...rationally ponder over and negate what is not you(the non self)...the following song of soul is all about what is not you...the non self encompasses the outer world composed of the 5 elements(sky, earth, fire, air and water;as per the vedic norms) or all the elements of modern science(i.e.the periodic table)..it encompasses the inner world of mind, body and even the ego...it includes the waking, dream and deep sleep stage...the most subtle of thoughts... the triputi of knowledge i.e.the triad of knower-knowledge-known...it includes the three bodies(gross, subtle and the causal bodies also)...it includes everything what you can think of...the entire inner and outer universe..what is visible and the invisible is non self... In the end you will arrive at the unnegatable consciousness(why unnegatable? as it would amount to negating the very existence(the support of all)). Consciousness is the very substratum of knowledge thus can never be denied. the pure consciousness is shiva. i.e.You. 1. Meaning: 1.Neither am I the Mind nor Intelligence or Ego, Neither am I the organs of Hearing (Ears), nor that of Tasting (Tongue), Smelling (Nose) or Seeing (Eyes), Neither am I the Sky, nor the Earth, Neither the Fire nor the Air, I am the Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness; I am Shiva, I am Shiva, The Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness. 2. Meaning: 2.Neither am I the Vital Breath, nor the Five Vital Air, Neither am I the Seven Ingredients (of the Body), nor the Five Sheaths (of the Body), Neither am I the organ of Speech, nor the organs for Holding ( Hand ), Movement ( Feet ) or Excretion, I am the Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness; I am Shiva, I am Shiva, The Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness. 3. Meaning: 3.Neither do I have Hatred, nor Attachment, Neither Greed nor Infatuation, Neither do I have Passion, nor Feelings of Envy and Jealousy, I am Not within the bounds of Dharma (Righteousness), Artha (Wealth), Kama (Desire) and Moksha (Liberation) (the four Purusarthas of life), I am the Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness; I am Shiva, I am Shiva, The Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness. 4. Meaning: 4.Neither am I bound by Merits nor Sins, neither by Worldly Joys nor by Sorrows, Neither am I bound by Sacred Hymns nor by Sacred Places, neither by Sacred Scriptures nor by Sacrifies, I am Neither Enjoyment (Experience), nor an object to be Enjoyed (Experienced), nor the Enjoyer (Experiencer), I am the Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness; I am Shiva, I am Shiva, The Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness. 5. Meaning: 5.Neither am I bound by Death and its Fear, nor by the rules of Caste and its Distinctions, Neither do I have Father and Mother, nor do I have Birth, Neither do I have Relations nor Friends, neither Spiritual Teacher nor Disciple, I am the Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness; I am Shiva, I am Shiva, The Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness. 6. Meaning: 6.I am Without any Variation, and Without any Form, I am Present Everywhere as the underlying Substratum of everything, and behind all Sense Organs, Neither do I get Attached to anything, nor get Freed from anything, I am the Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness; I am Shiva, I am Shiva, The Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness.
