Today, i would love to tell you more about Sergiyev Posad, to continue my theme about Russian city’s . Sergiyev Posad (Russian: Сергиев Посад) is a city and the administrative center of Sergiyevo-Posadsky District in Moscow Oblast, Russia. It is often visited as a part of the Golden Ring around Moscow. It grew in the 15th century around one of the greatest of Russian monasteries, the Trinity Lavra . The monastery is named after St. Sergii of Radonezh, a 14th century monk from Rostov whose pious, ascetic existence attracted numerous followers to the hermits retreat he had established in the forests around Moscow. The wooden monastery built by Sergii and his followers was razed by the Tartars shortly after his death, but his tomb survived and, in 1422, the year of his canonization, work began on the construction of the Trinity Cathedral. This imposing, white-stone building, with unusual sloping walls and gold dome, became a blue-print for Russian church architecture and the inspiration for the Kremlins Cathedral of the Assumption. In 1458 a brick chapel was added to house the tomb of Sergiis successor, Nikon of Radonezh. Inside the Cathedral there is a silver shrine containing the relics of St. Sergii, and an iconostasis with many works by Andrei Rublev. * I will leave a website with more information of Trinity Lavra in the comments. Town status was granted to Sergiyev Posad in 1742. The towns name, alluding to St. Sergius, has strong religious connotations. Soviet authorities changed it first to just Sergiyev in 1919, and then to Zagorsk in 1930, in memory of the revolutionary Vladimir Zagorsky. The original name was restored in 1991. (c) There is 13 pictures of this beautiful city and Trinity Lavra, i would like you to show :)
