Today if we identify ourselves as Hindu, visit Hindu temples and study the Vedas, the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, it is because of a great visionary personality - Bhagavan Shankaracharya (circa 8th century AD). Every Hindu must feel himself highly indebted to this great personality because He saved, revived and strengthened Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) in the most critical moment of Indias history by walking on foot the width and breadth of India to establish the 4 Mathas in Indias 4 directions. They are 4 great monasteries which became the official custodians of the 4 Vedas and were imparted the duty to train spiritual masters and teachers to keep the lamp of Dharma alive in this country. His memory is deeply impressed on every important temple which existed from the time before him and on every important tradition which came into existence after him.
