Today in 1737: Princess Augusta is born at St Jamess Palace. Her father, Frederick, Prince of Wales, had a tense relationship with his parents George II and Queen Caroline. When his wife, also named Augusta, went into labour, Frederick whisked her out of Hampton Court Palace and took her to St James’s Palace to give birth – making sure his parents couldnt be present. In 1740 to celebrate his daughter’s third birthday, he commissioned a masque about Alfred the Great, which included the new song ‘Rule, Britannia!’ The intention was to make Frederick appear more British than his German father.
