Today in 1774, a letter from the Committe of Correspondence (that first American blog described yesterday), urged the people of Boston to cease purchasing British goods in order to protest their actions. It was a free market attempt to answer a problem with their government. In 1775, John Adams wrote from Boston to his wife Abigail of his amazement at how an army of 2,000 men had amassed in less than 2 months. "So sudden a formation of an Army never took Place any where," he wrote. His determination was sound: "I will not despond. I will lay all Difficulties prostrate at my feet .... My Health and Life ought to be hazarded, in the Cause of my Country as well as yours, and all my friends." Adams proposed to Congress the same day a Continental Army. He suggested George Washington, of Virginia, lead the mostly New England outfit, in part to give the Colonies a greater sense of unity, as opposed individual, separate militias.
