Today in 1836, reporting from San Felipe, Tejas: GOVERNOR SMITH SUSPENDS THE GENERAL COUNCIL UNTIL MARCH 1 Today things got really HOT on this cold winter day in San Felipe. Governor Henry Smith issued a blistering attack upon the members of the General Council, saying that their continued support for a plan to invade Matamoros will bring ruin to Texas. Smith blasted the Council for issuing resolutions without quorums, for appointing officers to lead an expedition to Matamoros, and for passing bills to aid the expedition to Matamoros. Further, Smith wrote that the services of the Council are no longer needed until the convention meets on March 1. He also states that he will continue to discharge his duties as the Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy. Observers in San Felipe report that the split between Smith and the Council has been brewing for some time but it is now out in the open. These same observers say that the crisis was brought to a head by the report that Lt. Col. James Neill issued on January 6 which reported that the Alamo had been stripped of 200 men and all of its supplies for use in the expedition to Matamoros. Those supporting the invasion of Matamoros feel that taking control of the Port there will deny Santa Anna an important asset for use in invading Texas and supplying his troops while in Texas. –From Don Gray’s “The Lone Star Republic” page on Facebook.
