Today in 1837, Michigan became the 26th state after agreeing to cede the Toledo Strip to Ohio in exchange for the western Upper Peninsula. Having explored these mineral lands during expeditions with Henry Rowe Schoolcraft in the 1830s, Douglass Houghton was appointed Michigans first State Geologist. He occupied that position until his untimely drowning death in Lake Superior near Eagle River in 1845. Among the first to survey the Copper Country and a cautious promoter of the Upper Peninsula, Douglass Houghton is best remembered today as the namesake of Houghton County, MI and its county seat of Houghton. #MiningMonday #MichiganStatehood
