Today in 1921 Rep. Alice Robertson became the first woman to preside over a House session. She wielded the gavel during a half-hour roll call vote on funding a delegation to Peru to observe that countrys celebration of its independence. Robertson was known not for supporting womens rights but as a opponent of womens groups and suffrage, but she nonetheless was appointed to the Committee on Woman Suffrage during her single term in office.
