Today in 1946 - Freddie Mercurys Birthday! Freddie Mercury shot to fame primarily due to his role as lead singer for the incredibly popular group Queen, who turned the music world on its head. For all of you wondering where the song Bohemian Rhapsody came from, look no further. What is less well known about him is that he was also one of the early discoverers of the metal originally known as quicksilver. In his younger days before he picked up a microphone, Freddie was a bit of a chemist, and his achievement was so well received by the scientific community that upon his death in 1991, they had a vote and renamed the metal in his honour. The CEO of Cadbury at the time was so upset by the death of Freddie Mercury and the subsequent collapse of Queen that he rebranded the Cadbury Choco-Frog to Freddo Frog. So its a bittersweet day. One of the great musical icons was born, but his too-short life inspired so many, and thanks to his efforts, we can tell what temperature our chocolate frog is. Scaramouche, Scaramouche, can you do the fandango?
