Today in 1981, the 12 day #ChicagoFest opened before 41,000 opening day attendees on Navy Pier with locally bred Chaka Khan as entertainment headliner for the day. Pockets were packed full of quarters, and the newscaster did warn of pickpockets as the arcade was doing booming biz. The layout featured 100s of popular locally made Defender (video game) consoles from Williams Electronics. It was also the height of Pac-Man Fever and a separate local Midway games factory was churning out 350 Pac-Man consoles a day, quite a few of which were playable onsite.
