Today in 1988, SUGAR RAY LEONARD won the WBC light heavyweight and WBC super middleweight belts by TKO in 9 rounds over Donny Golden Boy Lalonde. Though this bout has come to be known for its gimmick factor, the fight itself turned out to be somewhat exciting. The eccentric Lalonde dropped Leonard, a significant favorite, with a right hand in round 4. But following Leonard around and eating potshots between landing his own, occasionally, wore on him. In round 9, Leonard sent Lalonde down with a hook, and up shakily, Lalonde was dropped with a combination shortly thereafter, and the fight was stopped. The WBC had essentially created their belt for the super middleweight division for this bout, and allowed both titles to be on the line, provided both men weighed in under the 168 lb limit. Why this was done, however, was likely driven by extra sanctioning fees.
