Today, in 1991, 325,000 union members gathered in Washington, D.C., for a Solidarity Day march and rally for workplace fairness and healthcare reform. In 1980, on this date, the Solidarity" workers movement was founded as a strike coordination committee at the Lenin Shipyards, Gdansk, Poland. The strike launched a wave of unrest in the Soviet Union that ultimately led to its dissolution in 1991. Happy Labor Day weekend (and remember, Unions brought us the weekend). This is clipped from the 1954 film -- This is Your Union -- by the United Steel Workers Union (USW). This film describes the work and departments of the Union and is narrated by David J. McDonald, then International President of USW.
