Today in 2007, Category-5 Hurricane DEAN smashed Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula with winds of 150 knots (175 mph). DEAN was a classic “Caribbean Cruiser”—a deep-tropical, long-tracking hurricane that stayed on a straight-W path at a very low latitude for many days—until a high-octane collision with land. iCyclone rode out the storm in the small port city of Chetumal, which was just S of the eye and got pounded hard. Check out the dramatic video. It’s from the rough, pre-HD days—but it’s still iCyclone’s creepiest. The bumps in the night are right out of a cheap horror flick:
