Today in African American history: ALEXANDRE DUMAS IS BORN July 24, 1802 - December 5, 1870 Alexandre Dumas is born as Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie in Villiers-Cotterets, France to a Haitian mulatto, Thomas Alexandre Dumas, and Marie Labouret Dumas, a French woman. His books The Three Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Man in the Iron Mask have made him one of the most widely read French authors in the world. ACTOR IRA ALDRIDGE BORN July 24, 1807 - August 7, 1867 (60) Shakespearean actor Ira Aldridge born in New York. Aldridge made his career largely on the London stage. He is the only actor of African American descent among the 33 actors of the English stage with bronze plaques at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Stratford-upon-Avon. He is well known for portrayal of Othello.
