Today in Black History: 1864 Patrick Francis Healy became the 1st Jesuit priest of African descent. He earned his doctorate from the University of Leuven in Belgium, becoming the 1st American of African descent to earn a Ph.D. In 1866, Healy returned to the U.S. and began teaching at Georgetown University. On July 31, 1874, he was named president of the institution, the 1st American with African ancestry to be president of a predominantly White college.
