Today in Brevard history: 30 July 1898: The sale of Col. H. J. Tiffin’s ostriches at Courtenay, on Monday last, was attended by some fifty people; but it only resulted in four chicks leaving the farm, the balance being bought in by Col. D. L. Gaulden, of Titusville. One pair of the young birds, 15 weeks old, brought $32.00, and were bought by W. J. Tucker, of Fort Pierce, who will place them on exhibition in his menagerie. The other pair were purchased by Attorney Geo. M. Robbins, of Titusville, at a like figure, for Mr. J. A. MacDonald, of Miami, where they will be interesting curiosities for the visitors to that place. Mr. J. G. Bast, Col. Tiffin’s manager, extended in the latter’s behalf the hospitalities of the plantation to all visitors during the sale, and accompanied Attorney Robbins and Sheriff J. P Brown (who conducted the sale), with the two young ostriches secured for Miami, in a sailboat to Titusville, to see the birds safely shipped from there by rail. Mr. Bast has, by his supervision, demonstrated that ostriches can be successfully raised in Florida. Out of a brood of seven, six have been raised beyond the dangerous period (six weeks) – the first instance of the kind east of California. – Indian River Advocate.
