Today in Disaster History 1972 - Along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard, 129 people were killed in a ten-day encounter with tropical storm Agnes. 1973 - In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, 27 people were killed when an Aeromexico flight hit high ground. 1981 - In Casablanca, Morocco, riots resulted in the deaths of about 100 people. 2002 - In Jixi, Heilongjian Province, China, 111 people died in a gas explosion at the Chengzihe coal mine. 2002 - In Tanzania, 48 miners died of suffocation in a gemstone mine after the oxygen pump failed.
