Today in Hampton History 2007 – The Fox Hill Merchants softball team defeats G. P. Gwaltney of Suffolk in an exhibition doubleheader, the first contests for the Hillians in 17 years. From 1946 through 1990, Fox Hill provided the equivalent of a major league sports attraction with its fast-pitch teams, winning state championships in 1955-56, 1959-60, and 1962-68, and participating in the fast-pitch World Series in 1965, 1967, 1969, and 1973. As many as 4500 spectators crowded into the stadium behind Francis Asbury School one Saturday night in 1960, as fans came in droves to see such world-class teams as the Clearwater (FL) Bombers and the Flatiron Athletic Club of Philadelphia. The Hillians never had a losing season, but quietly faded out of existence in 1990.
