Today in Highlands Military History: On January 2, 1902 First Lieutenant Benjamin M. Hartshorne Jr. of Highlands NJ was killed killed in action on January 2, 1902 near Lanang, Philippines, he was 28 years old. On January 2, 1946 the 8th endorsement for the initial request of October 1st was sent from the Headquarters of the Army Air Force, Air Installations Division to the Commanding General of ATSC at Wright Field Ohio stating that Watson laboratory was to take control of the Twin Lights and Oakhurst sites on January 25, 1946. On January 2, 1948, Headquarters, Air Defense Command at Mitchell Field, New York N.Y. wrote a letter to the Chief of Staff, USAF, Washington DC, requesting that [the] radar site, [the] AN/CPS-6 radar equipment and associated base camp on government owned property located at Twin Lights, New Jersey, be transferred to Headquarters, Air Defense Command, effective June 15, 1948. Informal conversations with the Commanding Officer of [Watson Laboratory] and his staff resulted in complete concurrence of the plan for transfer. [Watson Laboratory] requested that a provision be made whereby the 4151st AFBU (Electronics Laboratory) Watson Laboratories would be allowed to continue operational and performance tests on the radar equipment as they had been doing in the past. The Air Defense Command at Mitchell Field believed such arrangements were desirable as close liaison between engineering and using tactical echelons were of inestimable value to both. … It was understood that the Air Defense Command at Mitchell Field proposed to operate the Twin Lights radar site as a main GCI and warning station for the New York Defense Area. It was also understood that this action on part of the Air Defense Command would save the U.S. Government a large sum of money each year.
