Today in History: August 31: Congress passed legislation creating pre-stamped envelopes (1852); radio’s 1st new program was broadcasted in Detroit (1920); “Superman” premiered on radio with Bud Collyer in the title role (1942); Walter Cronkite started working for the CBS Evening News (1963); 2.25 million preordered copies of Michael Jackson’s “Bad” album were shipped to stores making it the largest preorder in the history of CBS Records (1987); Ken Griffey and Ken Griffey, Jr. became the 1st father and son teammates to play on the same team, the Seattle Mariners (1990); and Diana, Princess of Wales, died in an early morning car crash in Paris, France (1997).
