Today in History: August 9: The 1st ship to carry the American Flag around the world returned to Boston after a 3 year voyage (1790); the 1st steam locomotive started its 1st run between Albany and Schenectady, New York (1831); “Walden” was published by Henry David Thoreau (1854); Nathan Ames patented the escalator (1859); Alva Fisher received a patent for the electric washing machine (1910); Betty Boop Debut in “Dizzy Dishes” (1930); Jesse Owens became the 1st American to win 4 gold medals in one Olympic Games (1936); the U.S. Forest Service and Wartime Advertising Counsel debut “Smokey the Bear” (1944); ‘The Fat Man’ atomic bomb destroyed half of Nagasaki, Japan and killed 70,000 people (1945); LeRoy Satchel Paige was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame (1971); Richard Nixon officially resigned as President of the U.S. (1974); Larry Csonka, Len Dawson, ‘Mean’ Joe Greene, John Henry Johnson, Jim Langer, Don Maynard, and Gene Upshaw were inducted into the Football Hall of Fame (1987); and Donald Duck received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (2004).
