Today in History: On December 7, 1941 Japan launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Naval base at Pearl Harbor. This attack led to the United States entry into World War II. Also on December 7, 1941 the popular wartime phrase, “Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition” was coined by Naval chaplain Howell M. Forgy aboard the U.S.S. New Orleans, which was among the ships bombed by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. An officer in charge of an ammunition line on that same ship during the attack said, I heard a voice behind me saying, Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition. I turned and saw Chaplain Forgy walking toward me, along the line of men. He was patting them on the back and making that remark to cheer and keep them going. I know it helped me a lot, too. Christians may differ on the issue of war, but we can all agree on the importance and inspiration of U.S. military chaplains in ministering to the spiritual needs of our nation’s service men and women.
