Today in History – 1858 – Abraham Lincoln accepts the nomination for Senate saying “A house divided against itself cannot stand. 1884 – The first roller coaster in America opens today - The Swtichback Railway at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. 1896 – A large earthquake at the fault in the Japan trench, 120 miles east of Japan’s main island of Honshu causes a huge tsunami which claims the lives of more than 20,000 people. 1897 – The Great Alaska gold rush begins with the news of the first discovery at Bonanza Creek. 1903 – Henry Ford forms Ford Motor Company in Detroit with James Couzzens and Dodge Brothers. 1903 – Pepsi-Cole is registered with the US Patent office. 1922 – Henry Adler Berliner makes the first successful helicopter flight at College park, Maryland. 1933 – FDR’s “New Deal” pledged last year, opens with bank, rail, industry bills and farm aid initiatives. 1963 – Valentina Tereshkova becomes the first woman in space. 1987 – A species becomes extinct as the last known dusky seaside sparrow dies at Walt Disney World.
