Today in Savannah history January 4, 1899 Surgeon General George Miller Sternberg arrived in this city to inspect its new hospital and supply depot. The Savannah Medical Society held a dinner for Surgeon General Sternberg at the De Soto that evening. Sternberg’s report in 1896 of the Military hospitals in the United States included St. Joseph’s Infirmary and their Marine Ward. St. Joseph’s Infirmary was to provide room and care for one dollar a day. The Goette Funeral Home under the care of Joseph Goette would provide care for those unlucky soldiers for seven dollars a day.
