Today in Savannah history July 7, 1750 the first African American woman is baptized in this city by Reverend Bartholomew Zouberbuhler. The day is also known as the dedication of the first Christ Church building. The wooden frame building started with the laying of the cornerstone by paster Thomas Bossomworth (later he was one of Mary Musgrove’s husbands) in 1744. The pastor of the church was Bartholomew Zouberbuhler in 1750 when it was finally dedicated. The wooden structure did not survive the tragic fire of 1796 which burned over 200 buildings in the city.
