Today in Western New York Weather History : 1955 A 24-hour rainfall, ending 5pm of the 6th, of 3.11 inches was recorded at the Buffalo airport. The midnight to midnight rainfall on the 6th of 2.55 inches established the record for maximum precipitation for that date. Only minor flooding was reported. 1986 October 3rd-5th...heavy downpours on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th caused some local flooding problems. Almost two and a half inches of rain were recorded at the Buffalo Airport during the three day period. High winds on the 5th knocked out power to about 1000 customers. A peak gust of 53 mph was recorded at the Buffalo Airport about 11pm. Wind damage as reported from Niagara, Orleans, and Erie counties. On the lake front, the strong winds broke loose an entire dock of 30 boats and moved it several miles down the river. 1995 5th-6th…The remnants of Hurricane Opal passed just to the west of Buffalo on the 5th and 6th. Two to three inches of rain fell over much of the area with isolated amounts of near four inches over parts of the Western Southern Tier. Sustained winds were estimated between 35 and 40 mph, but the easterly winds (in contrast to the prevailing southwest direction) did down some trees and power lines. 2002 Low pressure over the upper Midwest deepened rapidly as it moved to Quebec . The strong winds that accompanied the low downed trees and power lines across the eastern Lake Ontario region. Damage was reported in Hannibal ( Oswego county), Watertown ( Jefferson county) and Lowville (Lewis county). The strong winds funneled up the length of Lake Erie and produced a 51 knot gust at the Buffalo waterfront.
