Today in history (July 6, 1967), the first shots were fired - TopicsExpress

Today in history (July 6, 1967), the first shots were fired heralding a 30-month war between Nigeria, Britain, Russia, Egypt, and their allied forces against the Republic of Biafra. Over 3 million Igbos were lost. The declaration of the state of Biafra was necessitated by the continuous killing of Igbos (Jos, 1945; Kano, 1953 and 1966) and the obvious inaction of the government to quell the killings which still happens till today. Dim Ojukwu fought for justice while Gowon and his collaborators fought for unity - One Nigeria. The question is, can unity be achieved without justice? The answer is a capital NO. Has Nigeria fared better? NO. Did Nigeria achieve unity? NO, because the so-called "One Nigeria" is a fraud and unity will continue to elude her until justice is achieved. May the Igbo souls lost during the war continue to rest in peace.
