Today in history Mar. 14, 1919 - at the Western Labour Conference held in Calgary vote to form the One Big Union passes. Delegates consisted of most union locals in western Canada. They decided to conduct a referendum among Canadian union members on whether to secede from the American Federation of Labor and the TRADES AND LABOR CONGRESS OF CANADA, and form a REVOLUTIONARY INDUSTRIAL UNION to be called the One Big Union. The peak of the One Big Union was in late 1919 and early 1920 when there membership was around 50,000 members. In 1923, their membership had dropped to just 5,000 members and later in 1956 it was absorbed into the Canadian Labour Congress. While its peak was relatively short, it did provide an example of unionism by industry to follow later on in labours history
