Today in history: On May 10, 1497, Amerigo Vespucci departed from Cadiz, Spain, setting sail for the New World. In 1503, due to its abundance of sea turtles, the Cayman Islands were renamed Las Tortugas. In 1823, the first steamboat to navigate the Mississippi River arrived at Fort Snelling, Minn. In 1869, the first Trans-continental Railroad was completed at Promontory Summit, Utah. In 1877, U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes had the first telephone installed in the White House. In 1910, Halleys Comet made its closest approach to Earth. In 1967, the Rolling Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were arrested on drug charges in Chichester, England. In 1969, the U.S. spacecraft Apollo 10 transmitted the first color pictures of Earth from space. And in 1970, the Boston Bruins beat the St. Louis Blues in to win the teams first Stanley Cup since 1941.
