Today in history/my daily pun . . . in 1932, the NFL’s Providence Steam Rollers played their last home game at the cycledrome on the Providence-Pawtucket line (behind the old Sears and Roebuck building and the underground bowling alley . . . it was razed in 1937 for the building of the first E.M. Loew’s Drive-In theater . . . which has since been razed and now is home to a supermarket and the Bonanza Bus terminal). A high scoring football game can be very offensive. Providence Steam Roller facts: Two stars of the team were, the Cronin brothers, Bill and Jack, both starred for Boston College and are most associated with the Boston Red Sox. In 1925, Providence was the first NFL team to play its home games in a bicycle racing stadium (the cycledrome) built by sports promoter Pete Laudati.; they are the only NFL team to play four games in a six-day period between November 5 and November 10, 1929; Providence made history by being the first team to host an NFL game at night under floodlights; they were the first New England team to win the Championship of the NFL in 1928, (they opened that season against Red Grange and the New York Yankees and after beating the N.Y. Giants by a 16-0 score they finished off the year with a 7-7 tie against the Green Bay Packers . . . they were declared the league championships because they had the highest winning percentage). The championship dinner was held at the Biltmore Hotel in Providence where one of the speakers that evening was State Attorney General Charles P. Sisson. In congratulating the team, he said: I think the day is coming when pro football, if it follows the example set by the Roller, will take its place with baseball as the great national professional sport.
