Today in homeschool we took a field trip to Super Walmart and learned the following things: Were on a very tight budget so dont even bother stopping in the toy or electronics department. The boys each made their own grocery list and we discussed each one, what was awesome about it and what was missing (as in koolaid was on the the list but no sugar). We compared prices and decided whether it was a bargain to buy a bigger box or it made more sense to buy a smaller box, we talked about store brand foods and how some of them... Like butter...were awesome but others.. like mac n cheese...were not. We found the big meat chart that told us where certain cuts of meat came from. We looked at the prices of items and if the price was similar at our home town store, we decided to wait and buy it there to support local business and jobs. We discussed how it was that Walmart could charge lower prices on a lot of items. We talked about food storage and why some things were refrigerated and some were frozen. We learned about basic manners in stores, how you looked out for other shoppers and were courteous and extra special patient and helpful to elderly and disabled shoppers. We talked about different ways people pay for their groceries and Nick won the dollar prize for best estimating how much we would spend. We asked the clerk how her day was going and what she liked about her job. She was very pleasant and we stopped and told the manager we thought she was awesome. Nick complained that they were out of his favorite TV dinner. On our way out we learned that sometimes people are just batshit crazy and we should very calmly walk away and not laugh at them because 1) we have no idea the road theyve walked and 2) they might be dangerous. On the way home we decided that we had covered math, science and launguage arts. If we could just find some history, then we shouldnt have to do any more school work today. So we stopped at The Mussel Slough Tragedy monument, read it and discussed it on the way home. The End.
