Today in my SOC201 class, something happened that really offended me. We were discussing types of careers where a person should not hold any prejudices and shouldnt practice discrimination. Naturally, I raise my hand and discuss my career path, social work. In the middle of my answer, a grown man in the class rudely interrupts by saying that it isnt possible for me to not hold any prejudices or discriminate any groups because that would mean I was, claiming to be a perfect person. Based on my personal beliefs, the ethics/values of SWK, and Buddhism, I naturally do not discriminate any group or hold prejudices. I pride myself on my empathy and openness to people from all walks of life. I try to get to know people personally before forming an opinion, and I always give second chances and benefit of doubt because I fully believe that people can change.This doesnt make me perfect in any sense of the word, as I would never claim to be. The world is a funny place. We cant even do what we feel is the right thing without being openly criticized. Cant make everyone happy.
