Today in our staff spotlight is Shannon who is on our team of Advocates. A Child and Family Advocate is someone who meets with the family to provide resources, assistance, and is a source of support. Through our Advocates, we are able to ensure that families in Wayne County are able to access needed services and feel supported while going through a difficult time. Keep up the great work, Shannon! KT: About how long have you been working at Kids-TALK CAC and in what position? Shannon: Ive been a child and family advocate at Kids-TALK since June of 2013. KT: What do you like most about your work here? Shannon: I really enjoy connecting with parents and having the chance to educate and empower them. Another thing I enjoy is sitting with the kids and playing games like uno, apples to apples, hangman, and cards. KT: What is something interesting about you? Shannon: I have a 20 year old brother with Autism. KT: What social work skill do you use daily? Shannon: Empathy is probably one of the skills I use the most. A lot of our parents feel ashamed, angry, and confused about the situation their child is in and need someone to listen to what they have to say. I also think its important to be flexible because families have different needs or respond to different styles. Being genuine and friendly is also really important because it makes people feel welcome.
